My article on Climate Change

Filed under: World — happyscribblers @ 6:51 pm

Ever heard or seen any cyclones, tornadoes, flooding, mudslides, ice caps melting, irregular weather patterns, whales dying and the disappearance of penguins before in your whole entire life? Well, I have and I am sure that most of you have too.  These are the things that we can see or hear whenever videos of climate change are shown to us.

But how many people in this world are bothered about this? How many people can the activists affect and make them realize about what’s happening to the planet Earth? To start of with, I have surveyed 10 Singaporeans and asked them just one question. This is the result that I get – 8 out of 10 Singaporeans are aware of the climate change that is happening but only 6 out of that 8 people are doing something to save the Earth.

So what does this tell us? Yes, from the result that I have gotten, I can tell that the message has got through to a lot of people but to make  them adopt a lifestyle that is friendly to Earth will not be as easy as counting 1,2.3. Time and energy will be needed to succeed for this kind of lifestyle in a country.

The United Nations Framework Convention has defined climate change as “a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods”.

According to United Nations Headquarters, 11 out of the last 12 years are ranked the warmest years since 1850. Carbon dioxide is the main contributor to the climate change. The sea level is rising, there are lesser snow covers, the glaciers are melting, the artic is warming and more intense and longer draughts have been observed since the 1970s.

Personally, knowing about climate change and how serious it can be, my family’s lifestyle has changed quite a bit. Well, it’s better than doing nothing at all right?

In the time where there are no advertisements telling us to switch off our electricity, use the recycle bins and Al Gore has never made a speech about climate change on concerts, I have wasted away my electricity and lights usage and threw my unwanted papers and bottles in the rubbish bin. But after watching Al gore making a speech, watching videos of the drastic changes that happened on Earth and mother nature and researching more about climate change, I have learned to switch off all the electricity when not in used and have all the unwanted papers and bottles collected and thrown in the recycle bin.

This realization has only affected me in my family and as for my parents; they are switching off the electricity because of the increment in bills. They are doing this not for the Earth but instead for financial reasons. They have not realized that they are actually helping to save the earth. By this, I realized that the only effective way to get help from elders to save the earth is to tell them that they can save a lot on their bills.

And as for my 5 year old sister, I have taught her to throw the papers and bottles in the recycle bin located right outside our home. It is not really a necessity to explain to her about the climate change because she will never be able to understand it. But as she grows up, it will be my responsibility and her school’s responsibility to educate her about climate change. This goes to every child in the world.

Now, let’s compare our modern century to 1000 years ago. 1000 years ago, battles were fought using swords and archeries. MAN travels by foot, horses, camels and elephants. There are no factories to emit any carbon dioxide. There is no electricity but instead the stars and lamps to light their way through the night.

Now, battles or war as they call it, were fought using tanks, guns and bombs. MAN travels by vehicles and airplanes. There are thousands of factories that emit carbon dioxide. Thousands of lights are turned on through the night.

My point here is that, if the people from 1000 years ago can survive without electricity and all the other things that our generation have right now, why can’t we?

But, us human being are the ones who created technology and thus making the Earth sick. Therefore, we are the ones who should be responsible for being kind and caring to the Earth and Mother Nature.

A lesson to learn

Filed under: World — happyscribblers @ 4:04 pm

Lets talk about this guy. His name is Geert Wilders and he is an MP in Netherlands. He has called for ban on the Quran – which is a holy book for the Muslims. The reason for the call of the ban is because he has claimed that -

“the Quran “call on Muslims to oppress, persecute or kill Christians, Jews, dissidents and non-believers, to beat and rape women and to establish an Islamic state by force”.

He even added on to say these -

“Ban this wretched book like Mein Kampf is banned! Send a signal to Jami’s attackers and other Islamic radicals that the Quran cannot be used in the Netherlands as an inspiration or an excuse for violence,”

and

“I am fed up with Islam in the Netherlands: no more Muslim immigrants allowed. I am fed up with the worship of Allah and Muhammad in the Netherlands: no more mosques,”

(Source is from http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/FAEC4703-83E2-44DA-9DA4-1A7702C354C1.htm?FRAMELESS=true&NRNODEGUID=%7bFAEC4703-83E2-44DA-9DA4-1A7702C354C1%7d)

Now let me add my 2cents in this matter.

First of all, does Geert Wilders even know a single Arabic word to even read the Quran??? I can bet you, gurantee you and am 100% sure that he does not. Because from what i’ve known and learned, everything he had said about the Quran is the opposite.

And finally, about not wanting anymore Muslim immigrants and condemning the religion is just the same as discouraging human rights and their freedom to practice any religion they want. This time, he will only condemn Islam. But what if one day, he finally decided to condemn all other religions.

So, my advise to people who wants to get to know a certain religion. Do not go for any bullshit sources, like the media, for information or knowledge of that certain religion. Geert Wilders has made claims and accusations without investigating anything deeper. For example, if you want to know more about christianity, you read the bible and talk to a priest. And if you want to know more about Islam, you read the Arabic Quran and talk to a certified Ustadz/Ustadzah(something like a priest). That way, you get the right sources and the right information.

P/S. Reasons i am blogging about this are because i want people to stop stereotyping each

other, stop discriminating and try to understand others cultures. There are many people like Geert Wilders already existing in this world. Adding to that number would be the end of worldpeace. I’m speaking to myself before i speak to anyone else….

The End.

Woman Empowerment

Filed under: World — happyscribblers @ 3:22 pm

Who says women are weaker than man? Yes, some of us may be physically weaker than man but that doesn’t mean that we are weaker emotionally and mentally too. Below are some of the women I will feature who have made a difference in the world.

Benazir Bhutto

 ts1.jpg

She is a Pakistani politician and is the first woman to be elected to lead a Muslim State. Bhutto was sworn in for the first time in 1988 at the age of 35, but was removed from office 20 months later under the order of then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan on grounds of alleged corruption. In 1993 Bhutto was re-elected but was again removed in 1996 on similar charges, this time by President Farooq Leghari. Bhutto went into self-imposed exile in Dubai in 1998.She returned to Pakistan on October 18  2007 in which she prepared herself for the 2008 national elections. She was killed on December 27, 2007 by a gunman. She is married with three children.

Oprah Gail Winfrey

ow.jpg

She is a multiple Emmy award winning host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the highest-rated talk show in television history. She is also an influential book critic, an Academy Award nominated actress and a magazine publisher. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, and the world’s only black billionaire for three straight years. She was born in rural poverty but her determination and past life has made her become a succesful woman. Winfrey was called “arguably the World’s most powerful woman” by some of the medias. She opened up an Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. The academy is for gifted girls with disadvantaged backgrounds but full of leadership qualities.

Angelina jolie Voight

She is an American film actor whom is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN refugee agency. Divorced from actors Johnny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, Jolie now lives with actor Brad Pitt and three adopted children from the 3rd world countries, Maddox, Pax, and Zahara, as well as a biological daughter, Shiloh. Jolie has promoted humanitarian causes throughout the world, and is noted for her work with refugees through UNHCR(United Nations .High Commissioner for Refugees.

 And last but not least….

Wonder Woman

 wonder-woman1.jpg

She is a fictional character created by William Moulton Marston and is continuously published by DC Comics. Wonder Woman is a founding member of the Justice League. Known as princess Diana in her own world, she has many powerful weapons but her signature weapon were her indestructible bracelet and Lasso of Truth. Marston had quote, “Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world.” Therefore, Wonder Woman has been a great example and representative for us woman to the whole wide world.

the Good Riddance Day

Filed under: Happenings, World — happyscribblers @ 7:16 am

After switching channels after channels with the remote control, which is connected to the television. I stumbled across World News on Channel News Asia[CNA], which is one of my favourite channel.

The most news I was glued to till now, is the Good Riddance Day which occured last year at United States, Times Square Building. To ends the misery of 2007. People came to shred away all bad memories, bad stuffs or things that must be varnished away from their life for the following year onwards.

Article can be read at: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12/28/out-with-the-bad-in-a-times-square-shredder/

I think this is a very good idea to dump all their stuffs away by shredding it. To me by shredding or dumping those bad fears, memories or work-loads, helps me to clear some of those thoughts away. Even writing a diary is of no use.

Benazir Bhutto Killed

Filed under: World — happyscribblers @ 6:10 pm

Pakistan opposition leader was killed in a suicide attack after a campaign rally on Thursday. Benazir Bhutto was shot on the neck and chest by her attacker, whom then killed himself using a bomb. At least 20 others were killed in the blast.

Supporters of Mrs Bhutto in the United Arab Emirates expressed shock and grief . Few among  all the countries that have condemned the assassination are the US, Japan, Italy, Iran and Britain. The death of Mrs Bhutto may cause a terror in the country.
On a personal note, i would like to add that this is a very sad tragedy for Pakistan. I respected Mrs Bhutto for being so strong as a woman and her will to bring democracy to Pakistan.
